Lens hoods seem to be one of the most underestimated photographic accessories amongst beginers and more advanced amateurs. In my opinion they are so important, the only reason you should NOT put them on is if they’re interfearing with your in-camera flash (blocking the light path and casting a shadow on your subject).

The primary purpose of the hood is to block off extraneous light sources coming into your lens causing flare and reducing contrast in your pictures. This reduction of contrast is not always clearly noticeable in the viewfinder and even when you think you’re safe from potentially harmful rays (sun, or another strong light source), they could be at an almost 90 degree angle from your lens and still penetrate your glass causing flare without you noticing it at shooting time. Lens hoods protect your lens as well and putting them on all the time will ensure you maximize the quality of your shots. If your lens did not come with a hood just pick one up on eBay or at a reputable online retailer like Adorama or B&H.

The key to good indoor shots is being able to capture your subjects with as much of the ambient light as possible, giving your picture a much warmer and natural feel. Problem is, most of the time that ambient light is not strong enough to register adequately and you end up with the bright white flash lighting up your subjects and a dark background, no warmth, no ambiance.
